Paris sees red!

Oh please, for the love of fashion will someone please advise Miss Paris Hilton that matchy-matchy outfits are only excusable on elderly women and not hip young heiresses! Miss Hilton should be advised that a non matching outfit is in fact very cool, way cooler than teaming your red frock with red shoes, a red handbag and a red headband!! Stylists the world over are seeing red over Paris' love of the matchy-matchy and women around the world are going blue over the waste of a good shopping budget! Maybe she is trying to kick start a new trend, maybe she is establishing this as her signature look?! Wouldn't you just love to take to her and mix her up!!

Miranda in Paris

It might have required a double take to recognise her but Miranda Kerr took to the Balenciaga catwalk on 1 October in Paris. This marks her move from David Jones and Victoria's Secret catwalks to the real deal. The lure of Victoria's Secret's sizable paycheck may have kept her away from Paris and Milan in the past but it looks like she might be doing the fashion rounds in the future. I might be the only person in the world that looks forward to seeing her with clothes on!

Irving Penn (16 June 1917 – 7 October 2009)

Renowned and influential fashion photographer Irving Penn died last Wednesday at the age of 92. Penn, who started out as an unpaid design assistant for Harper's Bazaar art director Alexey Brodovitch in the summers of 1937 and ’38, moved into photography after working under art director Alexander Liberman, at Vogue. His association with Vogue began in 1943 and earned him legions of fans who loved his beautiful portraits of models in still poses. His style transcended the many transformations fashion took over his long career and his photographs are displayed in museums and galleries all over the world.

Chanel - The Show, The Stars, The Spectacle

Chanel sure knows how to throw a shin dig and Karl blew the barn doors off it, literally, at the Chanel show on Tuesday. There were singers (Lily Allen), models involved in ménage à trois (how French), plenty of hay to roll in (?!), lots of clogs worn (how Dutch?!), fake tattoo jewels (how recession busting) and plenty of beautiful clothes (thank goodness!) What a head spin!

It was all in the detail and there is plenty to take home - keep your clear perspex bangles, buy a cuff with flower detail, dig out the old Dr Scholl's, short skirts are in for summer (how surprising)but wide leg pants work too (thank goodness)... Check it out in the photos that follow.

Friends or foe?

A new discovery has found basis for the theory that good behaviours — like quitting smoking or staying slim or being happy — pass from friend to friend like contagious viruses! Social scientists Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler used information collected over a number of years about several thousand neighbours in Framingham, Massachusetts to make the connection.

This discovery reported in
The New York Times is sure to end up on high rotation in womens magazines and have many women looking at their friends with sideways glances. It certainly has me thinking that next time I am in a bad mood I better watch myself as my bad mood will have my flatmate and friends cranky and ready to dump me quicker than I can say “cranky pants”!

Lucky for me all my friends are happy, funny, slim, gorgeous and healthy and while this may be exhausting at times I now realise it is a blessing in disguise! How many times have I bought chocolate and offered it to a friend only to hear them decline. This certainly helped me to limit my consumption and therefore help keep my waistline in check.

Now all we need is the study that confirms that boyfriends make us fat and we’ll have discovered two of the worlds least kept secrets.

Portmans - guilt free

If you haven't already heard or seen in print, Portmans has collaborated with Camilla and Marc designers Camilla Freeman-Topper and Marc Freeman to create a capsule spring racing collection. The collection includes 8 dress and jacket styles in black and white, black and gold, cream and white, and peach. The designs include some traditional racing styles - full skirts, one shoulder dresses. Unfortunately, they get the thumbs down from me. As will always be the hurdle with cheaper capsule collections, the challenge of designing a collection with cheaper fabric and fewer design features has seen Camilla and Marc's attempt produce less than lux looking and fitting dresses.

Ignoring the Camilla and Marc collection, Portmans has really upped the anti with its last collection, surprising many with some very edgy pieces that got everyones attention (see below). Its new collection follows on from the last and doesn't disappoint. Check it out at www.portmans.com.au I never thought I'd say it but you'll see me heading to Portmans this season for sure.
